Woodentops Abbeville Village Limited is part of a family-run group of nurseries dedicated to providing exceptional care and education in a nurturing and enjoyable setting. Established in 1985 as Woodentops Kindergarten by Mary and Steve McCahery, the group has expanded to include two day nurseries, with Woodentops SW4 opening in May 2014, accommodating 56 children.

The day nursery welcomes children from 6 months to 5 years old. The leadership team includes Mary and Steve, along with their daughters Laura and Sarah, who are committed to maintaining high standards of care and education.

The day nursery is situated in a beautifully converted historic building with spacious, bright rooms and dedicated sleep areas for infants. It boasts expansive gardens and outdoor play areas, allowing children to explore and engage with nature, including miniature allotments for growing produce.

The approach focuses on fostering confidence and kindness in children within a supportive environment that extends beyond the family home. 5 to 11 years and holds an "outstanding" OFSTED rating, preparing children for prestigious London day schools and boarding schools.

What it's like

Children receive a warm welcome at the nursery gate from familiar, friendly staff. They confidently say goodbye to their parents and carers as they are escorted safely into the nursery. Children learn to be independent, hanging up their own coats and storing their bikes and scooters safely outdoors. They are happy and eager to explore the bright, spacious environment, curious about the range of resources, especially in the outdoor area.

Pricing & funding

Fees are charged for full day sessions from 8am to 6pm, with a minimum booking of three days per week. Monthly bills are calculated using an annualised formula over 50 weeks, meaning fees are consistent each month. Eligible children from nine months to four years old can access funded hours.

Outdoor space

Children are curious about the range of resources, particularly in the outdoor area, where they are keen to explore natural materials and build dens. Older children learn how to care for the environment, such as using food waste to make compost. Staff support them to develop confidence in their movements and to take risks, such as helping babies to use a walker and to climb on wooden frames.
