About this day nursery

Your Co-op Little Pioneers Nursery & Pre-School Tavistock House in Sunderland offers childcare for children aged 0-4 years. The nursery operates year-round, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Since its re-registration in 2022, the nursery has quickly established a strong reputation, achieving an overall effectiveness rating of Good in its November 2023 Ofsted inspection. The dedicated staff team, 30 of whom hold Level 3 or above early years qualifications, create a nurturing environment where children feel safe and secure, fostering strong attachments through an effective key-person system.

The indoor learning environment is thoughtfully designed, providing calm and restful spaces for babies and toddlers to make choices in their play, whilst offering stimulating activities for older children who are eager to explore. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on communication and language development, with staff engaging children in reading, singing, and conversations to expand their vocabulary and understanding.

A particular strength of the nursery is its support for children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND), with staff collaborating closely with professionals and parents to ensure consistent strategies and well-planned transitions for individual needs. While there is a large outdoor garden for physical development, the nursery is working to further develop this space to ensure all children, including younger ones and those who prefer outdoor learning, consistently benefit from accessing it for their health and well-being.

Inclusion & environment

How they support every child

SEND provision

Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is a strength of the nursery. Staff work with other professionals and parents to ensure they use consistent strategies to help children make progress. The arrangements to support children with SEND as they move between rooms and on to school are well planned and consider children's individual needs.

Outdoor space

There is a large garden outside where children can develop their physical skills, such as climbing and riding tricycles. However, the younger children do not always benefit from access to the outdoor space. This does not consistently promote their health and well-being or support children who prefer to learn outside.

My Daughter has come on leaps and bounds in learning, understanding, speech and social skills. She started at 1 year old and coming up to 4 years now. I'm happy with the quality of care she receives. Everything is uploaded onto an app and also a handover on collection. The Nursery is clean and tidy and always has always have different activities for children to explore including an outdoor space. Staff are brilliant, kind and caring. My daughter took to potty training very quickly and staff just followed what we done at home so there was no confusion between home and Nursery. Will recommend this nursery to friends and family, always happy with the care of my child and her development as she progresses. Thank you all.

This nursery is fantastic. My son adores it here and adores all the girls and staff. The office staff are amazing at sorting things out and helping to respond to any issues etc. They go above and beyond to help you and ensure the children are having an amazing time, and developing well. My son has come on leaps and bounds since starting and I credit nursery massively. I’d recommend to everyone. The new renovations also look amazing!

My daughter started this nursery a few months ago and I couldn’t be more happy with the care and attention she receives! She no longer gets upset either which is very reassuring. She has an amazing bond with her key worker who is fantastic and so patient with her. I could not fault any of the staff. The room and environment is always calming, cosy and very appealing. The new security system that came along with the brand new refurbishment is also very reassuring meaning no one can enter the building without permission first. I would 100% recommend this nursery to anyone who needs help with childcare!!

One of the best nursery I had my son in. It was his first nursery ever and all staff make sure he stelled in well. Especially Susan is very professional and caring. She even listens your daily talks and communicate so well to learn your kids need. Care about your kids well being and personal development so well. Manager also very professional and listens to all the worries and try to resolve it as better way as she can. Unfortunately had to move out from Sunderland and still couldn't find this type of care we get from Travistock in South yet with hefty amount of money.

My eldest son attended Tavistock 11 years ago and my youngest son attends now. Tavistock is not near my place of work or my home, but the quality of provision makes it worth the extra travel time. Both of my sons have additional needs which were and are met to the highest possible standard. Staff are welcoming, friendly and conscientious, highly trained and knowledgeable in their field. Many of the same staff remain from my eldest to my youngest attending which is a sign of a healthy working environment in my opinion. The learning environment and resources are well thought out and match children's interests creating an enabling space for development. The secure entry system provides extra peace of mind. I have recommended this nursery to many friends and will continue to do so.
