Horwich Day Nursery, registered in 2025, is a childcare setting located in Bolton, catering to children aged 1 to 3 years. The nursery operates Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm, offering year-round provision.
While the nursery has an EYFS-based curriculum, the latest Ofsted report, dated December 12, 2025, highlights that the overall effectiveness is 'Inadequate'. The report notes that although the setting meets safeguarding standards, there are significant areas for improvement in various aspects of provision, including the consistency of learning experiences and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
The setting is actively working to implement a Special Educational Needs Coordinator and improve referral systems to external agencies for SEND support, although the report indicates that these processes are not yet fully embedded. The outdoor learning environment offers a range of experiences, including a mud kitchen, and children do access the outdoors daily; however, outdoor activities are not consistently well-planned or effectively delivered.
Despite these challenges, children display a strong sense of belonging, enjoy stories, and demonstrate developing self-help skills and positive social interactions. The nursery fosters an environment where children show high levels of care and respect towards one another, and staff facilitate warm, trusting relationships.
Our ethos
Horwich Day Nursery's philosophy centres on providing the best possible care and valuing each child's individuality. They foster confidence, problem-solving, independence, and social interaction through engaging, child-led activities and exploration. The nursery values outdoor play, learning life skills through play, and creating a happy, loving, and secure atmosphere.
What it's like
The provider lacks a clear understanding of the 'Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage' and fails to meet some of the requirements, leading to several breaches, low staff morale, and poor well-being. Staff deployment issues, a lack of mandatory training, and inadequate qualifications compromise effective care, particularly for younger children who are often moved to areas designed for older children to meet ratio requirements. The curriculum does not consistently challenge or meet the needs of all children, and processes to support children with SEND are not well established.

Inclusion & environment
While efforts are underway to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), these processes are not yet well established, resulting in delays in identifying and addressing gaps in children's learning. The arrangements in place to support children with SEND are not embedded. Leaders have now ensured there is a special educational needs coordinator in place. The setting is working to improve systems for making referrals to outside agencies to secure support for children with SEND. However, staff do not act swiftly when concerns are identified to ensure children access the support they need. This does not ensure children with SEND make good progress in their learning.
Leaders fail to plan staff deployment effectively during routine organisational tasks, often bringing children back indoors shortly after they begin outdoor play to complete other duties. These decisions, influenced by the need for qualified supervision and limited staffing, disrupt children's learning and play experiences. The inspector observed the quality of education being provided, indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact that this was having on children's learning.
Since September the new owners, Shaz and Sheen, have really improved this day nursery. My daughter goes to before and after school club and I was delighted that they agreed to open at 7am which is so useful for me and my husband because we don't work in Horwich. There are always lots of activities for the children including dance lessons, baking club, multi sports, movie night and bingo. There are also lots of games that the children can play with. My daughter is really happy there and that is the most important thing for me.The nursery also offers very competitive rates and I would always recommend Horwich Day Nursery to friends and colleagues.
