About this day nursery

Just for Starters Day Nursery, a family-run establishment with over three decades of experience, was founded in 1993 by Maureen Edge and is now directed by her daughter, Deb Jervis, along with her son Harry and Estelle Thomas, both qualified teachers. This nursery upholds a tradition of providing high-quality, child-centred education within a warm and nurturing atmosphere.

Catering to children aged 2 to 5 years, the purpose-built facility accommodates up to 42 children daily. The dedicated team of Level 3 qualified nursery nurses is committed to fostering learning and growth through engaging play, creativity, and exploration, staying current with the latest early years educational practices.

The nursery boasts an open-plan layout with three distinct indoor areas: a playroom with a soft play area, a quiet area for imaginative and pre-school learning, and a creative room for crafts, water play, and mealtimes. Hot meals are prepared by Four Oaks School Kitchens, accommodating various dietary needs.

A notable feature is the large, secure outdoor garden with artificial grass and a covered play area, allowing for year-round outdoor activities and nature-based learning projects. Situated within the Four Oaks Primary School complex, the nursery benefits from access to the school’s sports fields and hall, facilitating a smooth transition for children preparing for reception.

The nursery emphasises strong family partnerships, using the Famly app to keep parents updated on their child’s daily activities and progress. Just for Starters prioritises a happy, safe, and stimulating environment, believing that children thrive when engaged in play, which forms the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

Just for Starters is on the grounds of Four Oaks Primary School. The location proved ideal for our family. The intimate environment immediately appealed and influenced our decision. My granddaughter started aged two, she is now three and the development she has achieved is remarkable. Not only in her expanding language skills and knowledge but also her social abilities—especially her understanding of sharing and caring for other children. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the nursery staff, who collaborate closely with families to ensure the best outcomes for children. The staff and management team consistently uphold a high standard of professional practice. Through the Famly app, parents are kept updated and can observe the engaging and inspiring activities that the children participate in. There are regular opportunities for parents / grandparents to be actively involved in the children’s learning experiences, fostering a strong sense of community. The team is managed with great effectiveness, and every member demonstrates compassion, flexibility and empathy, always with a friendly approach. Their genuine concern extends not only to the children but also to the wider family, which has truly contributed to a powerful sense of belonging. The continuity of the staff team, with no changes during our time at the nursery, provides further reassurance for parents. Ultimately, children themselves are the most honest critics. When my granddaughter returns home from nursery saying she has had a lovely day and is eager to go back again, it is clear that Just for Starters is providing an environment where children are happy, secure and thriving.
