Lumpy Hill Adventure Playground is a vibrant and welcoming space in Islington, providing a free-access play service for children aged 6 and over. It is run by the Islington Play Association, a charity dedicated to children's right to play.

The playground offers a dynamic environment where children are encouraged to engage in imaginative and adventurous play, from building structures with hammers and nails to cooking in an outdoor clay oven and enjoying a campfire area. Parents and carers are advised that this is a play service, not a childcare service, and open access means children aged 6 and above can attend independently.

For younger children, those under 6, supervised visits with parents or carers are welcome during specific Saturday hours. The playground champions child-led activities, allowing children to decide their daily engagements.

It has a rich history, operating for almost 50 years and moving to its current site in 1975, which was formerly the Market Road cattle market. The playground staff aims to create a stimulating environment where children can freely express themselves and develop through play, emphasising the importance of outdoor and messy activities.

Pricing & funding

Charges are based on sliding hourly rates for venue hire, with lower hourly rates applied to longer bookings. A refundable deposit is required for all bookings.

Good to know

  • Available during term-time on Mondays or Sundays, and school holidays on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Deposit is fully refunded if the party leaves on time, with no damage, and the venue is left clean.

Visited Lumpy Hill for a ten year olds birthday and had great fun on the bikes and swing ropes. The place is in need of updating and cleaning up and the bikes and scooters etc definitely needed some TLC. However with all that said I understand that they do a wonderful job providing FREE play facilities for children during the holidays and all that is required is registration and providing a packed lunch. The children all seem to have great fun here.

I used to come here a while back, although I was older than most of them there I had some decent times There were some older people there too but not so much now Pretty decent place though, only critique I have is sometimes it may smell weird there

I know the lovely person who owns Lumpy Hill and we had a lot of fun exploring the area and speaking to new people.

My sons was there during the summer it was fantastic for them but then they went during Easter holiday and I’m discussed with the swear words and rude language they came home saying in the last week they were there not happy at all my sons won’t be going there ever again.
