Penn Road Children's Centre Early Years Service offers comprehensive early years childcare for children aged 3 months to 7 years 11 months. The centre provides flexible sessions that can be booked a month in advance, allowing parents to only pay for the childcare they require.
In addition to daily nursery provision, Penn Road Children's Centre also operates a Holiday Club for children up to 7 years 11 months during non-term time, and a Breakfast and After School Club specifically for children attending Penn Wood School. The centre is committed to inclusivity, with wheelchair access, provisions for special dietary needs, and extensive experience in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
They offer a tailored approach to learning and development, with each child assigned a key person who works closely with parents and other professionals to ensure individual needs are met. The centre actively promotes a supportive environment where children can develop self-esteem, resilience, and a love for learning, encouraging independence and exploration through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
Continuous professional development ensures staff are highly skilled in areas such as speech and language, visual impairment, and autism spectrum disorder. The centre also facilitates smooth transitions for children moving between rooms or to new schools, maintaining strong links with external agencies for comprehensive support.
Our ethos
The Children’s Centres aim to create a supportive environment, where children are able to learn, develop and make progress as individuals, where their strengths are nurtured and any identified areas of need are supported. Our underpinning principle is to ensure that every child can say with confidence:- I have good self-esteem, I am resilient, I can develop, learn and succeed. We are committed to working in partnership with parents, carers and relevant professionals to assess, address and implement support for children’s individual needs, to ensure that they are included.

Inclusion & environment
Although some strategies for children who display emerging gaps in their communication and language are proving successful, there is scope for further development. Staff do not always plan and teach some interventions precisely enough for children to fully benefit, and do not consistently use a step-by-step approach that builds on individual children's existing knowledge and understanding of language.
All children have daily access to fresh air and take part in strenuous physical activities to build their stamina. Indoor and outdoor learning environments for each age group are well-organised, offering a wealth of first-hand opportunities which ignite children's natural curiosity.
