The Coppice Pre-School and Out of School Club, located in a classroom within Smallwood Academy, offers childcare for children aged 2-11 years old. The facility operates 51 weeks a year, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.
The pre-school caters to children aged 2-5, focusing on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to prepare them for formal schooling in a playful and engaging environment. They maintain ratios of 1:4 for two-year-olds and 1:8 for three-to-five-year-olds.
The club leverages its location to ensure a smooth transition for children moving into Smallwood Academy's Reception class and provides a familiar setting for out-of-school care. Outdoor play is encouraged, with access to the school's extensive outdoor area.
A key worker system is in place to support each child's development and to foster communication with parents. The ParentZone app further enhances parental involvement by providing updates on their child's day, development observations, and direct communication with staff.
Before official enrolment, children undergo a settling-in period with free trial sessions to help them acclimate to the setting and routines. The Coppice provides nutritious snacks following government guidelines and accommodates various dietary requirements; pre-school children can bring packed lunches or purchase hot dinners from the school.
The Out of School Club offers breakfast sessions with included breakfast and a light tea for late after-school sessions. During school holidays, a Holiday Club is available for children aged 2-11, offering a diverse range of activities and flexible booking options, including last-minute hourly sessions.

Staff work closely with specialists to ensure that all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), make good progress. The special educational needs coordinator spoke to the inspector about how they support children with SEND.
Children benefit from outdoor experiences. They are delighted as they explore the 'spiky' outer shell of conkers. Staff help children to compare this with the 'smooth' conker they find inside, and children expand their vocabulary as they learn about nature.
