Thumbs Up Club, located at Addington School, offers specialised care for children aged 4-19 with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Established in 2002 and re-registered in 2009, this charity is managed by a small committee and operates both a holiday club and an after-school club.

The holiday club runs each weekday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm during the two-week Easter holidays and four weeks in the summer. The after-school club is open every weekday during school terms from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm.

The club focuses on providing a supportive and engaging environment where children can develop their skills and well-being. The team, comprising 52 staff members, including 20 with Level 2 and above qualifications (12 holding Level 6 qualifications), is highly experienced in working with children with SEND, with three management team members being qualified teachers.

The club is dedicated to improving family unity and providing respite for parents, with a strong emphasis on individualised care plans and integrating professional guidance into daily activities. They utilise a variety of purposeful play areas and sensory spaces to cater to the diverse needs of the children, ensuring a safe, stimulating, and inclusive experience.

SEND provision

Leaders explain that the ethos of the club is to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) to have fun and develop their social, independence and future life skills. Staff adapt activities with specialist equipment to ensure all children have opportunities to participate, and use behaviour management strategies specific to the needs of each child.

Outdoor space

Children are able to move freely around the facilities and make independent choices from the activities available within the inside and outside environments. Staff encourage children to join in physical activities, such as ball games, and children have access to resources like an inflatable obstacle course, ball pits, scooters and bicycles.
