About this day nursery

BELZ Nursery School, located in Clapton, within the London Borough of Hackney, provides full day care for boys aged 3 to 5 years from the local Orthodox Jewish community. The nursery operates from 9am to 3pm Sunday to Thursday, and 9am to midday on Fridays.

Children are warmly greeted by staff, and the key-person system helps to establish individual starting points. The curriculum includes teaching in Hebrew in the morning and English in the afternoon, with children confidently switching between languages.

Children also enjoy learning about mathematics through practical activities and begin to develop early writing skills through activities like threading and mark-making. Parents have expressed satisfaction with the support they receive from staff.

However, the nursery received an overall effectiveness rating of Inadequate in its latest inspection on 5 March 2024. The inspection highlighted significant concerns regarding staff safeguarding knowledge, deployment of qualified staff, and inconsistencies in teaching and curriculum planning, which impact children's learning experiences and independence skills.

The arrangements for safeguarding were found to be not effective.

What it's like

Leaders do not ensure that staff have adequate knowledge of safeguarding, compromising children's safety. Staff deployment is also unsuitable during parts of the day, meaning unqualified staff are present in rooms. Despite this, children are warmly greeted and settle quickly, and staff praise their efforts.
