Funfishers Out of School Club in York is a registered charity, established in 1990 by local parents, dedicated to providing outstanding childcare services. Catering to children from 9 months to 11 years old, the club offers a nurturing environment across its nursery, pre-school, breakfast, after-school, and holiday club provisions.
The philosophy centres on a child-led approach to learning and play, fostering independence and curiosity, which contributed to their 'Outstanding Provider' rating by Ofsted in 2022. Operating for 51 weeks a year, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, the club ensures that all profits are reinvested into enhancing facilities, staff training, and ensuring fair wages.
They place a strong emphasis on outdoor exploration, including Forest School sessions where children engage with natural resources, develop physical skills, and even tend to a vegetable patch, integrating healthy eating into their curriculum. The club integrates parents into their child's learning journey and uses the Famly app for efficient communication, booking, and sharing observations.

Verbatim quotes recorded in the Ofsted inspection
Parents give incredibly positive feedback. They comment that it is a 'privilege' to be able to send their children to the setting which is like a 'second home'.
Inclusion & environment
Staff have high expectations for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). All children, including those with SEND, make exceptional progress from their starting points in learning. Support for children with SEND is outstanding.
Can't recommend this place highly enough. The staff are fantastic and the setting is lovely. They're always making improvements and asking parents for feedback. It has a wonderful community feel. My kid has been going here for years, first to nursery and preschool, and then after school and holiday club and he loves it. And it's exceptional value for money!
Read on GoogleFunfishers is a lovely, friendly setting. It is unique charity run childcare offering nursery places from 9 months, a breakfast and after school club to local schools and holiday club for any children up to 11 years. The staff are lovely, down to earth and really care about the children in their care. Many have been there a long time. The manager is great and patiently answered all my questions about different aspects of the service they provide.
Read on GoogleAbsolutely brilliant service, Katie and most of the team do their upmost to accommodate however they can to help, we used Funfishers over 3 terms. Exceptional.
Read on GoogleMy son had scratches all over his face while collecting him, when enquired their response was that he didn't mention it, and that he was happy today. What's the point of my kid telling them this happened after it happened. My expectation was that they keep my kid safe which is not the case.
